Fw 190D-9 Campaign Problems and Suggestions

In thought I might start a thread about the dora campaign.

At the moment I have only one question:

In the "navigation, beginner" mission I am supposed to fly at 450 km/h on a heading of 125 (if I remember it correctly). I do that, nevertheless, the mission narrator periodically tells me to check heading and speed, and finally I fail the mission. My question now: heading 125 is that indicated heading on my compass, or do I have to correct for magnetic deviation, etc.? The speed of 450, is that indicated airspeed, or do I have to correct for altitude and wind?

There was an error with the mission, its possible the fix didnt make it in.

I have attached the fixed mission, you can try replacing it and seeing if that is indeed the issue.

Hi Sith,

I flew the mission you attached, and could make it a little further into the mission, but still missed Krymsk. Not sure if that's because of the different mission, or because I flew it differently.

I still believe that your mission checks for true ground speed and true magnetic heading, not for indicated airspeed and compass heading that the pilot can read off his instruments. I had to fly the course at a IAS of significantly less than 450kph and at a compass heading several degrees less than 125 (40), but still missed the airport.

Maybe it would be useful, in the mission briefing, to provide the pilot with a magnetic deviation chart of the area and a formula that relates IAS to TGS given a barometric altitude, temperature and wind.

Also, you give the pilot 300s to complete the first leg (which is correct), but only 240 s for the second leg which is just as long as the first leg (this is too little time to arrive at the airfield for a TGS of 450 kph)

Otherwise great missions so far.

If anyone else has any feedback on it, I would love to hear, once we get rockets I would like to add some more mission, and of course once we get Normandy and assets I want to do a proper one.

Hi Sith,

I have now made it passed all the missions up to and including the ground attack mission. In the ground attack mission I got the message that I took out more than 90% of the targets, and assumed that this means I have successfully completed the mission. So, I quit the mission, but got only 50% results. Turns out you get credit for passing the mission only 1 minute after completing the task. I think that's a little confusing, since most people will assume they passed the mission as soon as the get the 90% message.

Just a small point.

Did you use the mission above I attached to make sure you had the most current one? I have no issue passing it.

Thanks,

No, I didn't use that only tried the stock Campaign mission. Just wondered if it had been fixed or updated yet.

I'll download yours later and see if it is that the current Campaign one is broken.

I must be really crap as I can't get through this mission!

I keep failing the second the part, is it a true magnetic heading I have to follow as mentioned above or the compass heading on my flight controls on my dash?

Thanks.

  • 4 weeks later...

I'm one of these fellaz, who got stuck at first navigation mission, stock file, fixed file, doesn't matter :D. Just to make things clear, are we supposed to follow indicated figures (IAS, compass heading) or true ones (TAS, magnetic heading)? As soon as I'm approaching Novorossiysk I'm always getting kicked out.

Just tried the second one...It didn't give me any warnings or anything, and when I got near the target airfield, I got a fail.

I'll try again and post a .trk if it doesn't work.

EDIT: Here's a track. Maybe I'm not turning hard enough at the waypoint.

Missed it.trk

The second leg was driving me nuts, so after 4 attempts I just opened the mission in editor, checked where I was supposed to get and did it on the 5th one. Forget about using compass, this piece of junk is hardly useful. After waypoint one you must head for Krymsk, so just look on the horizon, find the big lake, check the map, memorize where the airport is located in relation to the lake and fly there by dead reckoning, only checking the speed every now and then.

I am updating it to use a beacon for the second leg. Its tough as we dont have the greatest options for WWII navigation right now, gonna do something different for the 109 I think.

Looking forward to it. Navigation would be easier if the Dora had a proper gyro compass, which doesn't go numb when I pitch or roll even slightly, or if the magnetic one was just bigger, with nicely marked rose scale, so we don't have to guess which part of the number "12" the needle has to point precisely when one wants to fly heading 125.

The Germans built a fighter plane with most advanced cockpit layout and systems for its time... and mounted this damn primitive compass in it. Mind blown :D.

I just flew the Basic Navigation mission and failed it, then flew it again and failed again. Here's what I witnessed and what I did:

I used the updated mission from post #3.

I flew it in 1.2.12.35194.

I maintained a heading of 125° +/- a few degrees.

After an initial over-speed, I maintained an airspeed of 450 kph with a deviation of roughly +/- 20 kph.

Throughout the entire mission, I got notices about my airspeed.

I was finally told that I was off course and had to try again. By that time, I was still on the first leg.

I also just watched the replay of my flight. According to the F10 map, my airspeed was in the range of 265 to 273 knots, I assume that's ground speed. That translates to roughly 500 kph and would explain why I kept getting complaints about my airspeed even though I pretty much nailed 450 kph IAS throughout most of the leg. It would also explain why, apparently, I was beyond the "turn towards Krymsk" trigger zone.

It really looks to me as if the mission confuses ground speed with air speed on this first leg. Haven't gotten any farther than that yet.

I think there is some issues with the gauges in the cockpit and what the aircraft is actually doing, I just submitted a new climb mission, but for 6km, I had to use 5900m I think, so maybe the variances are too much for trying to make such a tight rule... I think my new new mission is better, but we will see, I think I am going to do something different for the 109.
