RX480 Benchmarks out!

Recommended Posts

OK so i was off, it's actually a 970 killer, not a 980 killer, anywhere from the same speed, to a bit faster than my 780... at least the refrence cards...

the stock cooling solution is really holding the card back.

its a simple aluminum block with copper core, no heatpipes or anything.

Aaaand as soon as the RX 480s go on pre-order, the price of the 970 drops to exactly the same... even some of the super heavily overclocked aftermarket 970s are only like 20$ more....

wonder if the RX 480 is even fast enough to use 8GB vram and still have the horsepower to hit high fps...

if its a VR card as they claim then maybe its got some tricks up its sleeve

benchmarks can be misleading, user reviews will be more interesting especially with VR

then again, claiming there even is such thing as a VR specific card could be the "trick"

what they're saying is, its VR capable, and inexpensive... not that it's a VR specific card, or will run VR better than any other card clock for clock...

it is...at 1080p the 480 does fine, 1440p and 4k it will start to suffer, also.

replace the crap alu block cooler to avoid over temp throttling

Hmm, wondering if it worth grabbing a second GTX970 now that prices should drop even further and set up SLI on my rig for 1440p in DCS World?

or sell your current 970 and add that money for a single card 1070 solution with less headache ahead :)

Seeing the benchmarks and the price levels in the shops I don't get all of the hype that AMD was creating around RX 480:

- RX 480 is at best at the same level as 970, usually however 970 is faster

- performance of 480 is heavily affected by CPU and with slower CPU the results of 480 are substantially worse than those of 970

- RX480 and 970 are at the same price levels in shops

Either I'm missing something or RX 480 is an disappointment and 970 would be a better option. Even more as prices of 970 will drop but rather due to launch of Pascal than RX 480.

For Budget it cant be beat yet, Performance Per Dollar and features (HDMI2.0, DP 1.3/1.4 Etc)..

if you want pure performance then the 1070/1080 cant be touched.

even with AIB Partners, Extra Power, Extra Cooling ant a 1500MHz overclock, the 480 wont Touch 1080/1070s.

For that you;d have to wait for Vega10 GPUs.

The RX 480 Works.... :) ... but i had to install windows new,

i Have to say its a Great Grafikcard.

I´m using the Caucasus map by Starway v 2.0 and the colored windschield mod

Here is a Test video.

That actually looks pretty good for a $200 Budget Card...

At this point i don't know what to do.. i wont buy 1070 at this price, but RX 480 is not enough for me.. i think i'll wait it out, and if the price drops before Vega i will go Team Green again..

1060's will likely be under the RX-480 if the GP-106 Chip stats are correct:

1280 Cuda Cores, 192 Bit Bus, 3 GB/6GB around 3.8 TFLOPS,

That's a Huge Drop compared to the 1070,

Which leaves room for validity of Ti Line (1080Ti to Combat anything Vega10 Based, and 1060Ti to Eventually cover the 5 FFLOP Area)

Like I said on Another Forum, I'm Strapped for Budget, so a 1st Tier GPU is out of my range for the next 2 Product Cycles (2-3 years).

I have a Surplus of Used Heatsinks and AiO Water Systems.

I'd be happy with a $250 RX-480 from a AiB Partner, And Either:

-Remove the Shroud Cover, remove the Cheap Aluminum heatsink, attach AiO Water cooler, and make a custom shroud cover w/ holes for the hoses and use Centro-Fan to blow air over Ram/VRM, And Likely add Copper heatsinks to the Ram.

-Remove the entire Cooling from the card, and if the GPU Heatsink Mount remains the same size, I have Spare Sapphire DualX and MSI Twin Frozer Coolers to mount to the GPU as well as Copper Heatsinks for the Ram Chips etc.

This would prevent underclocking due to heat, as well as give a higher headroom.

1500MHz GPU would put it around F9 Fury levels.

The reason the 970 is the same price is the RX 480 is because of the RX 480, so at the very least you can thank the RX 480 for that.

AMD was advertising RX480 as to be better than 980 for a price lower than 970. For the moment there is no need for nvidia to drop their prices as AMD didn't show anything outstanding - which I would be great as the prices for 1070 and 1080 would have to go down.
