Visual range and model LOD.

Does the visual range settings change anything with the performance of the A2G/A2A visual spotting?

Because with settings low and visual range to high I sometimes see planes better zoomend out than zoomedin.

Guess it's the level of detail that comes in... Any of you?

No. I'm referring to the LOD. Level of detail for each plane, when object are 10km the engine is not using the full model but a simplified version.

I'll provide screenshot when back home.

I'm not crazy and bet that the low I can see the low detail model (first two shoot) then when you zoom in the detailed one has too much good camouflage, not realistic.

Now make sense that i'm not able to see much, i was "scanning" zoomed on MP

I see them (3 tu95 close to the center of the reticule)

See them....

Disappear!

Visb Range: High

MSAA:OFF

HDR:OFF

Anisot:OFF

Ter.Shadow:OFF

It's mostly the ancient LOMAC era models that suffer from this, with the Tu-95 being an especially bad example. Those models tended to use bigger/darker models for their LOD models to help a tiny bit with spotting. The newer models don't do this.

You can force higher quality model LODs via graphics.lua albeit with some performance penalty, look for the lodMult = 1.0; parameter and raise it to around 10 or so, and if your FPS doesn't suffer try raising it more till you get it where you want it.

Ok. So is a well know issue limited to tu95 or few other planes.

To me seems that ED doesn't use automatic test suite to quickly reproduce models render in all conditions for visual inspection.

What he said :music_whistling:

But you don't need to change it 10. Set it to 2 or 3 max, otherwise your FPS will be unplayable.

No longer active in DCS...

Thank you but I don't want to touch anything.

Just want to improve my MiG21 naked eye tactics.

Do you know if it is just the Tu95 or maybe also some fighter?

Happen on 2.0 too?

I dunno if it's since been fixed, but it used to affect the MiG-21. The tail fin would disappear beyond a certain distance, which greatly reduced the plane's profile from the side and made it much harder to see from those angles.

I've noticed some other planes that have LoDs that are smaller or are a different shape from what they should be. A minor example is (IIRC) the F-15: beyond a certain distance the wing trailing edges become straight and the wingtips become parallel rather than their proper pointed shape. This makes it much harder to tell apart from something like a Flanker when viewed from above. Many planes will also apparently lose their weapons and change paint scheme at longer distances.

An example of some related silliness: the B-52's long distance LoDs don't have damage states, which may cause a double take if you shoot a B-52's wing off and then the wing magically re-appears once you get further away. I suspect that this affects many fighters as well but because they are so tiny compared to a heavy bomber you don't normally notice.

I have tested with this parameter at 3 but I cant see a difference with the default value ...I would like to increase the distance at which the objects lost their shadowing, which is quite short IMHO...that makes using zoom in "displays" a real pain when the planes look with no kind of shadowing...any way to increase this??

Take a look at my MODS here

I really felt this the other day when trying to engage CH 53E helicopters with my Mig.

There are three in this first shot, but they are almost impossible to see.

Adding a little zoom helps.

A this zoom level, they retain their true color.

For me, the color shift makes it impossible to track them. I'm following a white object that suddenly turns black when I get a meter further away. The LODs need to have the same color.
