Oh dear, it looks like people with nothing better on their hands will yet again fight about why aircraft they haven't touched, seen in action, lived to see during the war, or been in any way related to them is the better one.

They all had their strengths, but I'd take a P-51D over any of the competition. Higher, faster, more range. Works really well offensively, especially in an escort role. For interception, I would take a Dora. Nothing to scoff at there. For forward defense, the Spitfire, hands down. For a fighter-bomber, the P-47D was really the only choice on this list. I don't really know much about the K4.

If you aim for the sky, you will never hit the ground.

I tend to think that the later version German aircraft get underplayed a little as the war had turned by the time they came into service, they didnt have the numbers and the quality of pilot was getting lower all the time... I think both D9 and K4 are pretty mean airplanes... that said, I voted for the Spitfire... I mean it wins on sexy alone :)

I voted for the P-51 because I think it is going to really surprise people. It is as fast as usual and dives really well and has its well-known E-retention etc. The thing I think will startle most sim -jocks is that in this game it also TURNS quite nicely once you learn to ride its stall. It turns particularly well when its loaded with a comparable fuel load to lighter interceptors. I can get sustained 20sec turns at 68% fuel and at 25% I can manage 18.96 seconds. That is far better than other sims rate the Mustang. Aces high by comparison give the 51 a 21 second turn time at 25% fuel at sea level. The AI Dora doesn't even come close to being able to turn with you, which is probably why the AI stick to the vertical, which you can do just as well if you stay fast and don't get stuck in a slow speed sustained climb with the thing :)

Also, Just posting my 2 cents. I don't want this to be a debate so if you post don't start making direct responses to other people if your intent is to be contentious.

Well, the jug can out dive everything else on that list but climbing isn't its strong point. Probably a good plane to run away in though!

The paddle-bladed prop helped improve the ROC - can't remember the stats off hand.

(Then there's the old joke about P-47 pilots being able to unstrap and run around the cockpit dodging bullets...)

Paddle P-47 holds about 3200frpm. The thing alot of people don't notice about the P-47 with the paddle prop is that it holds it climb rate really well. It starts at 3200 and at 20,000 it it still holding 3000fpm. While that is not amazing or anything at first glance, what this means is that above 20k where the P-47 was supposed to rule the sky, It climb would be better than a 190 and about equal, or maybe just slightly worse than a 109. Not the Dora or K of course.

3rd time's the charm :)

lol Now you know why I didn't make detective.

Back on topic. If some poor sap think he'll get a kill first time he climbed in DCS wwii anything I have a P-51 waiting for him. :P

Spitfire gets the votes because it has always been made ez-mode in other flight sims. I really don't see how a Mk IX is going to match the 109K and 190D-9, unless people are silly enough to turn on the deck, which they will be.

P-51D | Fw 190D-9 | Bf 109K-4 | Spitfire Mk IX | P-47D | WW2 assets pack | F-86 | Mig-15 | Mig-21 | Mirage 2000C | A-10C II | F-5E | F-16 | F/A-18 | Ka-50 | Combined Arms | FC3 | Nevada | Normandy | Straight of Hormuz | Syria

It is all about pilot, that is why i can be on the WW2 server and be in a really bad place against 2 or 3 Human flyers and still come out with my arse in tact.......

With the Spitfire mk IX, you need to realize that in climbing it can beat a P-51D mustang, which is not to shaby. So it will really matter who the pilot is and if they and how they use their aircraft to it's strength and exploit E/A weaknesses..

I also agree regarding pilot skill. I do think however that pilot skill is much more important in this sim than it is in many others. Not only are the planes far more complex and have higher learning curves, the physics modeling in this allows for tactics that I have never previously been able to perform in other sims. The advanced aerodynamic simulation allows players to squeeze every last ounch of performance from their planes in ways that are not possible in other sims. When playing Aces High or Il2, you always knew EXACTLY what was going to happen because the FM's were simplistic and based on scripts. A great many things are not taken into account in other sims, and some of the things that are aren't modeled as accurately as might be desired. I think that we are going to discover all sorts of things out about these planes that will be different from their modeling in previous sims. I have noticed that energy fighting in this sim is much different than it is in others.
