RCAF Skins 2.0...

Ok... Having updated my templates to match the latest game version I will be re-posting my RCAF Sabre skins (as well as fictional Israeli ones smile.gif) to the User Files section of the DCS website. Watch this space...

First up is an updated Sky Lancers 1955 scheme:

Note the lack of Canadian coat of arms "shield" on the flag is intentional. The aircraft depicted hadn't had it painted on yet in period photos!

All updated skins will have authentic pilot figures including appropriate flying clothing, as well as helmet and unit insignia textures.

Aircraft internals updated to latest game version.

I'm starting to weather the aircraft now, although this one will stay relatively clean as it was an airshow performer.

I'll update this thread as the new skin versions are accepted by DCS.

Also planned for release are:

Sabre Mk.5 - More OTU/STU trainers, as well as 1 Air Division front line fighters.

Sabre Mk.6 - early, hard-edged variant in service with 1 Air Division, as well as fictional IDF (Israel) Sabres.

Sabre Mk.4/F-86E(M) - Lend Lease Canadair-built Sabres as used by the AMI (Italy), RAF, and maybe some Greek and Yugoslav ones as well!

Stay Tuned smile.gif

Next up, Sabre 23058 of No. 421 "Red Indian" Squadron, 2 (Fighter) Wing, RCAF Station Grostenquin, France.

Note: Squadron helmet art is simplified now as I haven't quite figured out the mapping on the helmet texture.

Dear Belsimtek, any chance of proper helmet and pilot templates, with mesh layers? Cheers :)

Finally got around to improving the interior texture of the speed brakes. My previous version had a couple of errors. Not sure if I like the paint chipping effect I put along the top edge, looks more like wet silver paint that dripped ;-/ I'm really not great at weathering...

Also tweaked the internal plumbing appearance based on period photos:

NEW - 422 Sqn. "Tomahawks" Natural Metal

Thought I'd throw in a new one...

Canadair Sabre Mk.5 23049 of No. 422 "Tomahawk" Squadron, No. 4 (Fighter) Wing, RCAF Station Baden-Söllingen, West Germany, circa 1955.

Standard 1 Air Division markings with the exception of non-standard squadron and aircraft code letters. 4 Wing seemed to use a different font than the rest of 1 Air Div... wasn't until the Sabres were camouflaged that they started using the familiar RCAF letter style :)

NEW: 439 RCAF Sabre Mk.5

Hadn't done a 1 (F) Wing Sabre in natural metal finish yet, so here's one.

Canadair Sabre Mk.5 23182 of No. 439 "Sabre-Toothed Tiger" Squadron, No. 1 (Fighter) Wing, RCAF Station Marville, France, circa 1955.

dcs%202015-04-26%2020-21-28-13_zpsr1bcerfz.jpg~original

As with the other natural metal RCAF Sabres of the era, 23182 wears standard 1 Air Division markings, this time with red ID stripes on nose and tail to denote 1 (F) Wing.

dcs%202015-04-26%2020-23-22-55_zpsdjgnvhwh.jpg~original

439 squadron pilots' helmets were painted yellow, with red stripe(s) running fore and aft, representing pilot rank. I haven't quite solved the mapping issues on the helmet yet so the stripes will have to wait ;)

441 RCAF Camouflaged

Canadair Sabre Mk.5 23314 of No. 441 "Silver Fox" Squadron, No. 1 (Fighter) Wing, RCAF Station Marville, France, circa 1955.

'314 still flies today, as "Hawk One", operated by Vintage Wings in Gatineau, Quebec, Canada. This is how she appeared as a front line fighter with NATO in the mid-fifties.

Added some more weathering effects, more chips, weathered paint, scratches, etc.

The Mk.6...

The Mk.6 was the most potent Sabre Canadair built. With a more powerful engine than the Mk.5's and the eventual return to a slatted wing, the Mk.6 could out climb, out turn, and overtake anything else NATO had in the late fifties. The Mk.6 continued to serve NATO until being phased out in 1963, and replaced in Europe by the CF-104 Starfighter.

Tom Stafford, NASA astronaut, managed to wangle about 10 hours in the Mk.6 while he was stationed in West Germany, flying the all-weather F-86D in the 1950s. He was so impressed by it's performance he devoted a paragraph to the aircraft in his biography!

Although most Mk.6 Sabres were built with slatted wings, the first 200-odd came off the assembly line retaining the hard-edged, fenced 6-3 wing like the Mk.5 had. They were eventually refitted with the slatted 6-3 wing in service.

Sabre Mk.6 23402, of No. 413 "Tusker" Squadron, RCAF Station Zweibrücken.

Fuselage marking string was moved aft around this time, to be more visible at various aircraft attitudes. Eventually 1 Air Division ditched the two letter squadron code and replaced it with the block letters "RCAF" ahead of the nationality marking on both sides, and the last three numbers of the serial aft.

Here's a couple pics of the aircraft in service, the first before the squadron tail art was finished, note the wing fence on the port wing:

And the aircraft later on, after the wings had been updated to the slatted version:
