AMD Catalyst 14.4 RC1

Windows XP 14.4 WHQL http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/desktop?os=Windows+XP+-+Professional/Home

from early tests it seems that we have a driver that finally puts the 13.9 .dll injection to rest, it would be interesting to see other users results.

edit: tests were with a HD7850 2gb in Win 7 x64.

edit: updated post with the WHQL link.

Odd... Seems to have updated my Chipset drivers too....

After it installed Displays in installed AHCI Serial ATA Controller (though driver date is 2006?)

Installed some other things... USB Devices all powered off, required reboot,

rebooted, windows re-installed all USB Devices, as well has Harddisk Volumes, required another reboot.

I hope AMD didnt just downgrade my driver from the Mainboard Supplier's.

Seems that my Marvel SATA3 Controller isnt listed not the ports on it..... yay.. thank you AMD.

No problem with my installation SkateZilla. It didn't touch any of the above. I installed the display driver and catalyst control panel, nothing else.

thanks, I shut down after re-installig marvel's SATA3 Drivers, so I dunno if the Sata Ports and controller will re-appear in Device manager.

I had a weird feelin the AMD Installer was gonna do this, even though I clicked through everything and it said everything AMD related (USB Drivers etc) were all up to date.

HDD Speed wasnt effected, but I prefer to have the correct drivers for my SATA controller and not the MS Generic crap.

Alot of people with MSI Cards are reporting fan control issues (prolly limited to 290/290x).

I'll boot my system back up after work today and give it a run down.

outside of a Few FPS issues, I was using the 13.9 injection due to 14.1, .2, and .3 having the rendering issues on the Map/Mission Editor and random black shadows flickering on the ground (similar to the mission editor GFX Glitches, going back to 13.9 resolved those in all 3 cases).

14.4 does bring in new Power and Fan control API, 290 and 290X should be throttling less sporadically.

Big performance increase for me! Unfortunately did not bench pre and post but it feels like at least +20-25% from 13.11

if you wanna bench you only need to place the DLLs from the other drive int he /Bin/ Folder.

Wow, something newsworthy!!

~45% increase using these! I thought I had messed up something in CCC and checked it again to make sure I was still sane.

I had to remove the FPS limit from autoexec.cfg to see the numbers as it never dropped below 30. Tested on 1.2.7 and 1.2.8 Beta using benchmark.miz

Now off to see where the gain came from.

It's weird cuz they didnt change anything in regards to DX9.

Maybe the DX11/mantle memory leak they've been trying to fix was in DX9 too.

Well, that was a quick hunt. My GPU utilization is now reporting 99-100%, whereas before it was around 75-80%. Using HWINFO64 for monitoring.

CPU stayed about the same at ~75%.

One thing I noticed, which may be even better news, for some reason my TRIXX overclock is not working, it is set and applied as normal but according to HWINFO64 it is staying at the stock clocks for core and memory. Did not have this issue before.

Edit: Memory usage on card also went up ~150mb to 1600, running 1920x1080 single monitor.

yeah, AMD changed the API for Power/OC/Fan controls.

Ignore the memory statement above, I was reading the wrong column. Guess I was just too happy.

Guess I'll try using CCC to OC for now, hopefully TRIXX will get updated as it's the only program I seem to be able to set the voltage in. Using CCC I manually edit the profile.xml for voltage settings.

TBH I havent been able to overclock anything in a while, I guess it's because of having a mix of Sapphire and MSI cards...

I tried to OC the Sapphire to match the MSI's Clocks (which I know it can), and as soon as I try to adjust the voltage the other card has a fit.

Adjusting mv in CCC will prolly fix the issue, as I have to use MSI AB to OC the Lightning and TriXXX to OC the DualX, they dont play well with each other, and messes up alot, so i wiped the profiles and just left them at stock.

if I can adjust mv in CCC I can just up the clock there.

But for now I just leave everything on default, and ramp up the fans when I play games.

XFire Games play smooth, then disable XFire for DCS.

Yea, I don't like the default fan profile and was another thing I changed with TRIXX.

At 100% usage with stock fan profile temp is around 70° and the fan runs about 55%. I set to ramp up at the 60° mark and hit max fan at 80°, it stays around 62° at 85% fan. Card is still pretty quiet at 100% fan so don't even notice the noise.

I did get mv to adjust using profile.xml and the overclock is stable again. Now if AMD would put a manual fan profile in CCC wouldn't need anything else.

I just run them full on unless it's a really cold day in which case i lower them to about 70%.

70% and lower on both of my cards is almost silent unless you purposely mute everything and put your ear to the case vent.

the difference between 70% and 100% is about 5 degrees C on a cool day and about 12 ^C on a hot day.

Anyone with FSX tested it? I'm still on 13.4 to avoid the FSX crash problems. Maybe test it myself this weekend ;)

No idea..

But if it's that big of a Deal,

just stay on 13.4 and copy the 14.4 DLLs to the /BIN Folder.

No need to mess with uninstalls, re-installs etc.

Im actually planning that after I get a Stable Set for desktop/3d Applications and other games, keep that driver and from that point on just download extract and copy the DLLs to the /Bin Folder until edge comes out.

can anyone post up those 14.4 DLL's? (is that cool to do so)?

I'd like to run an injection test with 'em.

I've been happy with using the 13.9 DLL's for my HD7870, and I'm afraid to move away just yet. would like to run some tests, and I'll report back with results.

thanks buddy! appreciate it.

If I go the full monty with the 14.4, I'll need to uninstall the 13.9, and use that registry/driver cleaner utility, and then install 14.4?
