Here is the result of nearly 100 hours of calculation for the first stage of photogrammetry, alignment of 1653 images :) Out of 1653 images, 1634 has been aligned succesfull :)

A trip to Ukraine would be awesome, it's a dream of mine. Will you be posting pictures of the cities and such or just the museum scans?

 

I've been to Poltava, there's an outdoor museum with Tu-95, Tu-160 Blackjack, Tu-22M1 and others.

I searcheed half a day for the entrance. nobody speaks/understands english so asking around was a huge undertaking. Until i gave up, met a guy at a train station who took me there and i got to see the planes. That was cool :).

We`ve got the first good photogrammetry 3D model:

 

Brian and Oleg took 1634 photos of the aft cockpit in museum,

then Oleg used special software to generate 3D mesh. The process took around 100 hrs.

 

19783831 polygons in the 3D model,

3ds max scene file is around 1 gigabyte, texture is about 800 megs.

This is a really great reference for 3d modeling, since all the dimensions are real we can start modeling the in-game cockpit!

You guys did this to use it as refference or to use it ingame? Because there are other methods of 3D scanning better than this one. This one based on photography is getting too much noise. Other methods are cleaner, i'll post 1 or 2 of them later...

We did also scanning, but Brian will compile all data soon as he back :)

As Oleg (3DArtistExtreme) says, the results he shows are purely the result of photogrammetry based on the images he took. No spatial position information at all. The scanner results (which I can't post process until back in the USA) produce spacial coordinates with 0.5 mm accuracy. However, the scanner struggles with reflective and/or black surfaces. So it will also produce a 3D model, but will have texture issues and some missing surfaces like behind a glass instrument face, or gaps on a tire. Dirty, dusty surfaces scan much better than a cleaned surface, and sometimes I use powdered chalk or rosin, and 'dust' a surface so it picks up. Markers, little stickers or dots placed on the objects can help both methods improve accuracy.

 

Both approaches, the photogrammetry purely by imagery, and the Artec EVA scanner produce models with issues, but those issues are separate and distinct. The hope is that when both are fully post processed, we can merge them into a unified model with precise uv and excellent textures.
